My Cake Inspiration Comes to Life

The cakes were one of the very first things I chose during our looooong engagement. I sat down with our baker about 16 months before our wedding! It was great to see how well my inspiration pictures translated into the cakes that showed up at our reception.

The Wedding Cake
I found this picture in In Style Weddings by Sarah Magid about a month after we got engaged, and I was instantly smitten!

The baker and I only talked about a few changes: using our wedding colors (purple flowers and light blue dragee for the flower centers), and adding some icing pearls on each tier. I was thrilled with the result!

The Cake Topper

Yes, you saw it in the picture above. It's turtles. Our turtle was our first pet together, so it has a special place in my heart. I stumbled across Tiffani Schreiner on Etsy, who makes custom cake toppers. At the time, she had made up some adorable turtles out of polymer clay. I immediately emailed her to set up a custom order!

Tiffani and I emailed back and forth a few times about different options for personalizing our cake topper, like eye color and veil/top hat. She even matched the flowers on the cake perfectly!

The Groom's Cake
I kept the groom's cake a total surprise from the groom...right up until someone told us how much they loved it as soon as we walked into the reception. Oops! Anthony works for IBM on Linux, so I found this picture of the Linux mascot (Tux the penguin) in a blue IBM suit.
Inspiration:

The cake was a lemon pound cake, his favorite!
