My Something Old: My Mother's Wedding Dress

My mother made her own bridal gown. That's right: cut up fabric and sewed it herself. I can't even fathom doing that. I've never met a sewing machine I liked!

When she offered to let me cut up the dress and use the fabric for my own wedding (there is NO way I would have fit into it), I jumped at the chance. Thank goodness she got married in the 70's, so I didn't have to deal with trying to re-use the polyester puff sleeves of the 80's!

Ring Pillows
My mom sewed these together. She used fabric from the dress for the pillow case, then trimmed it with lace from the dress and some ribbon from a craft store.

These are so darling, that we decided to use them in my brothers' weddings too. We created a family heirloom!

Garter
The garter was made of lace from the dress, plus some add-ons from a craft store including the little blue fabric flower! The garter was my "something blue" as well.

There are great DIY garter tutorials on DIY Bride and on WeddingBee.

Bouquet Wrap
I took some of the fabric to the florist for her to include in my bouquet wrap. The florist did a fantastic job weaving purple ribbon and my mother's dress fabric together.
